Abstract

Agricultural bio-inputs offer a promising tool for enhancing the sustainability of modern farming systems and decreasing reliance on synthetic agrochemicals. We review agronomic performance, environmental benefits, economic viability and commercialization concerns of agricultural bio-inputs including biofertilizers, biostimulants, microbial inoculants and biopesticides. A systematized critical narrative review approach was used to synthesize evidence from peer-reviewed literature and institutional reports published during 2014-2024. The reviewed evidence suggests that bio-inputs can improve nutrient-use efficiency, increase soil microbial activity, support crop productivity and increase resilience to environmental stresses, while contributing to reduced environmental impacts. Their performance is however influenced by type of crops, environmental conditions, management practices and quality of product. The review also identifies several barriers to wider adoption, including regulatory uncertainty, inconsistent field performance, limited farmer awareness, and commercialization constraints. Notwithstanding these challenges, the increasing demand for sustainable agricultural methods provides promising opportunities for innovation and market expansion in the bio-input segment. The findings underscore the need for supportive policy frameworks, harmonized regulations, ongoing investment in research and greater cooperation among researchers, industry stakeholders and policy makers to enable the effective integration of bio-inputs into sustainable and economically viable agricultural systems.
